Universal Symbols
Universal Symbols are pictographs that are designed to
communicate information across all language barriers. They are typically seen in locations that are used by
international travelers such as airports and train stations. Hospitals often make use of symbol
systems as a means of identifying the location of services. One of the most well-known
international symbol systems is designed every 2 years for the Winter and
Summer Olympics.
Symbol systems are used to prevent the misinterpretation or
confusion caused by text-based signage anywhere people of different cultures
are likely to gather. As our
nation becomes more multi-cultural, the need for clear communication through the
use of symbols is growing ever greater.
Your challenge is to design a 5-part symbol system
illustrating the 5 senses of Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell & Touch.
Each symbol should be designed on an 8”x10” file with
resolution of 300 ppi. Your system
must be united through color, style & form, although the 5 symbols should
be unique.
For visual examples of universal symbol systems, students may want to spend some time today researching various systems by
Googling phrases like “universal sign systems”, “universal access symbols”,
“universal symbols” or “Olympic symbols”
